Film Review

Daniel Day Lewis gives his best performance in My left foot, a wonderful film in which Lewis gave one of the most challenging performances I have ever seen: a man with cerebral palsy. Lewis' performance is brilliant. You've really never seen anything like it.My left foot tells the true story of Christy Brown, a scotsman with cerebral palsy. The film shows his struggle through the years. How he's been judged, how people looked down on him. But yet there are people who cared about him and helped him, such as Eileen(Fiona Shaw), who teaches him how to read and write, and his caring mother(Brenda Fricker).Lewis has given many great performances, such as Bill "The Butcher" in Gangs of New York, Daniel Plainview in There will be blood, and John Proctor in The Crucible, but Christy Brown is his strongest. I have never seen a performance like it. You grow to love him. You also feel for Brenda Fricker, obviously. Both her and Lewis won Oscars for their work here, and th…

Daniel Day-Lewis is Christy Brown, a victim of cerebral palsy who uses "My Left Foot" to write and paint in this incredible 1989 film. The movie also stars Brenda Fricker as Christy's mother, Ray McAnally, Fiona Shaw and Hugh O'Conor. Their brilliant performances, great script and wonderful direction by Jim Sheridan help to paint a vivid portrait of Christy Brown, an artist and writer who died in 1981 at the age of 49.Brown was born into a lower middle-class Catholic family where his mother was constantly pregnant (22 children in total, 13 of whom survived). His father considered Christy mentally retarded as well as physically handicapped, but he would not permit his son to go into a home. The children in the family would bid goodbye to him each day as they went off to school, and then his mother would feed him and talk to him.In the movie, Fricker conveys the sense of a woman who, despite being surrounded by a huge family, needs someone to talk to. Christy doesn&#39…

Anyone who says this excellent biopic of Christie Brown is easy watching is lying. Daniel Day Lewis, as far back as 22 years ago transforms both himself completely; bodily and character-wise and onto his first Oscar. What is refreshing is that the story isn't about a poor wee lad, almost totally crippled (except for that left foot) from birth with cerebral palsy who has no friends, because he has. It's about his sheer fighting spirit & utter determination that gets respect but he also breaks hearts. He uses that foot to score a winning goal in the street but his stoic exasperation often sends his mother to despair. If you thought that Casualty only existed around the firm but fair senior nurse way back when, played by Brenda Fricker, here she is in wonderful Oscar winning form. Girls are touched by Christy's attention, guys admire his guts and outright cheek. Christy becomes a noted poet and artist, either typed out one character at a time or with a brush, both by …
